Given the fascinatingly distinct personalities of perspectives of the authors, tradition has given each of the four gospel writers a symbol: Matthew - a man, John - an eagle, Luke a bull, Mark - a lion. We will be studying Mark's gospel. The fierceness of his testimony makes a lion an apt symbol. Addressing persecuted Christians, Mark's gospel tells a dark story of Jesus as a failed revolutionary whose mission mysteriously succeeds.
