This is a short documentary that we put together awhile ago when we began our work with the street kids in our neighborhood.
“Presence” and “prayer” – are probably two words that best capture what this ministry is about. As one social worker had said to us in the past, “The greatest need and challenge to homelessness are not more services but an alternative community for those who are coming out of the lifestyle of homelessness and drug addiction.” Our goal is to be that alternative community, alternative in the sense of being centered around alternative convictions. Nobody disagrees that change occurs when one gains an increased sense of dignity and self-worth. We believe that our dignity and self-worth comes not from what we do or accomplish, but what has been already done for us in Christ as proclaimed in the gospel. When we believe and rely on Jesus’ work and record (rather than ours) for our dignity and self-worth, we believe that kingdom power comes upon us and begins to work through us – bringing about personal and social transformation.
Fridays at 7pm we gather together to intersect with the street community simply by our presence and through prayer. We do this by walking the streets, catching up with our neighbors, handing out a few items (socks, handwarmers) and by asking how we can pray with/for them. We circulate the prayer requests with a group of volunteer who have committed to praying with us, for us, with them, for them. To find out more, check out the short street documentary we’ve made and/or visit our street blog. If you are interested in receiving the requests, or want to come out with us on a Friday night, please contact Ed Park.
